Common Life

A former professor of mine has an essay in the Best American Essays 2008. Her name is Patricia Brieschke and her essay is titled “Cracking Open.” A version of it appears here. Writes Adam Gopnik in the book’s introduction: “The only real ambition of an essayist is to be a master of our common life.” Yes, what a beautiful ambition.

About Face
April 11th, 2008
About Face: Women Write about What They See When They Look in the Mirror, which includes my essay, “Concealer,” will be released by Seal Press on June 13. Here’s a preview of the anthology:
“In About Face, twenty-three women write about the simple yet radical act of looking— really looking—in the mirror. In essays that reveal truths about the self in the world and which examine the societal prism through which we view—and judge—each other, the contributors in this collection take the cultural conversation about beauty to a deeper level.”
About Face was edited by Christina Baker Kline and Anne Burt. I can’t wait to read the entire collection, which includes essays by Marina Budhos, Kathryn Harrison, Jennifer Baumgardner, Patricia Chao, Kym Ragusa, Annaliese Jakimides, and Alice Elliott Dark. (I have many thanks to give to Alice.)
You can pre-order About Face here or via your local bookstore.

Literary Goddesses

Tara Roberts has a great new piece, “I’m Black and for Hillary. Get Over It,” published now on The Root. She also edited the wonderful collection What Your Mama Never Told You: True Stories About Sex and Love, featuring the beautiful work of Lucinda Holt. A big and gracious thank you to these two literary goddesses for keeping me on track once a month.
Speaking of the track, a list of common blunders in short stories from the judges of the Willesden Herald short story competition. They compiled the list after failing to pick a winner from 850 short story entries (via Practicing Writing).
