Illusion
June 24th, 2009
“I’ve always been fascinated with the relationship between performer and audience. It’s not visible but you can feel it. It’s kind of like a shared compliance or illusion that they’re there to see somebody believe in themselves…for them. It’s almost like you’re an extension of them or what they might want to be.”

The Long Meanwhile
June 22nd, 2009
A Booklist review of The Long Meanwhile: Stories of Arrival and Departure, edited by Molly McQuade, features a nice mention of my work! I’m happy to see this collection get some more press. Here’s the review:
As editor McQuade states in her introduction to this short story collection, the 22 tales included all revolve around the theme of transition. They also contain some marvelously inventive writing, reflecting the editor’s belief that “the goal of writing or reading fiction is to imagine something not already known.”
Beth Tashery Shannon’s story sings the praises of the sowbug (“There it gos. Withall its toes, look at em wiggle like a narmadillo”) in an enchanting, made-up language. In “Downwind,” a reticent black housekeeper recounts her employer’s protracted death from cancer, describing the slow, sad march with a searing lyricism. And in “Love in a Changing Neighborhood,” two lonely, asocial people find within each other the wherewithal to make a wonderful life together despite what outward appearances might suggest.
The collection includes stories by well-known writers such as Alice McDermott and Lydia Davis as well as talented newcomers such as Anthony Varallo and Ellen Papazian. It also puts on rich display a wide variety of writing styles, from tender realism to disturbing metafiction. A real treat for language lovers.

She’s Shameless
June 19th, 2009
I’m thrilled to know the editors behind She’s Shameless: Women Write about Growing Up, Rocking Out, and Fighting Back, the new anthology from the creators of Shameless magazine. Here’s the official write-up on the book, which launches June 23:
“She’s Shameless is an anthology of fearless and funny nonfiction about strong, smart, and shameless young women. With wit and honesty, the writers share stories of their teen experiences (both positive and negative) on everything from pop culture to high school principals. The book is founded on Shameless magazine’s tradition of smart, sassy, honest and inclusive writing, and reaches out to young female readers who are often ignored by mainstream: freethinkers, queer youth, young women of color, punk rockers, feminists, intellectuals, artists, and activists.”
Shameless magazine has been running excerpts and Q&As with contributors from the book:
“I Don’t Wear Cloaks,” by Amy Saxon-Bosworth
“Red Bars,” by Catherine Graham

Grateful

I’m so grateful for the ones who listen, and for Alice Neel. “If she had been satisfied with the paragon of what women were supposed to be, she would have accomplished nothing.”
